Large Universe Models in education

Understanding is assessed at intervals and changes continuously, which is why teaching so often addresses a student who no longer exists.

What it ingests

Coursework and problem attempts, timing and revision behaviour, assessment results, participation, prior curriculum coverage, and the dependency structure of the subject itself.

The belief that matters

What this student currently understands, held per concept with the prerequisite structure attached.

Assessment is a lagging indicator

A test measures understanding at a point and reports it later. Between tests, evidence accumulates in every attempted problem — including which step failed and how long it took — that is discarded.

A Large Universe Model holds understanding per concept and revises on each attempt, so the picture is current rather than a fortnight old.

Prerequisites make revision propagate

Subjects have dependency structure. Evidence that a student has not internalised a prerequisite should reduce confidence in everything built on it, which is the same propagation the mathematics and legal applications use.

Limits

This is sensitive data about minors, and a confident model of a child's ability carries obvious risks of becoming self-fulfilling. Any serious deployment needs the belief to be a teaching aid visible to the teacher, not a label attached to the student.

A Large Language Model answers from a frozen corpus. A Large World Model simulates a scene it is shown. A Large Universe Model keeps watching this industry's streams and revises what it believes as they move.
